The reason I don't like tight control
I started out on Commador because the hardware was't proprietary. I got my first IBM, 8086 and found that the power supply was in the Monitor. That made me check all the hardware before I purchased any new machine. By 2004 I started building my own machines because I wanted to make sure what I had.

Untill Vista, I was happily going along from 1 version to the other in Windows. MicroSoft has been getting harder to deal with all along. Their theory must be, the more control the better for profit. Vista got me to try Linux, and I have tried most of the bigger ones. They all work a little different than another, but can use most of the same software.

I hate being told what to do, so when Windows tried to force me in a different direction, I looked for an alternative. Unity almost drove me away from Ubuntu, but given a few weeks to see how it works, I like it. The bottom line is, I can load my system on / and data on /home, if Ubuntu goes where I don't want to go, I can load a different O/S in 20 minutes and be productive with all my old data, in the 1st hour.
