What computer would work best for a career in multimedia communications?

I will be heading off to school next year to major in multimedia communications and I would like to get a new computer, but before I invest in a new computer I was wondering what people would recommend? I have never owned a mac, but have heard a lot of good things about them. So for starters I was wondering should I get a mac or pc? What type of mac or pc specifically? I would love any suggestions and advice as to what programs to get with the new computer as well.

It's hard to tell what your specific needs will be, but the people providing your training might have the best estimate.
