The key problem for me with the migration tool is the need to change to Active Mode. As I suspect many schools and companies will not have an all-Win2k based network for several years, this presents a problem. We need to stay in mixed mode, which leaves the dilemma of how to migrate users and their home directories from NT 4.
Is there something specific keeping your organization from moving to Native Mode? If it is a matter of applications running on NT 4.0 could you move these to non-domain controllers? Just curious.

old servers
schooltech 12th Jun 2003
Until now (June), we had old Pentium servers that needed to stay as NT BDC's. I think we can replace those now with new Win2k boxes and use the old ones as member servers.
You only need mixed mode while you have have existing NT4 BDCs. According to MS, NT4 member servers and workstations aren't an issue.
Mixed mode is only required if do not have a pure Windows 2000 within the context of Domain Controllers, i.e. you still have NT BDC's. Workstations and member servers can still be NT in Native mode.

Now I am confussed, sounds like you need to be in native mode before running the migration tool. That's not true is it?

ADMT
ashraf_atif@... 18th Dec 2002
when we use the admt tools the profile for the user will be changed when the user will log on to the new domain, how can i return his old profile automatically
We already have Windows 2000, Exchange 2000. We are installing a new server computer, and are having problems transferring the mailboxes. We believe we need to transfer the information store, active directory, and the 2 'pub' files and 2 'priv' files. Will the ADMT transfer the active directory from the current Windows 2000 server to the new one?

I have also received that error message. It is most likely because you have not set up the required trust relationship between the old and new domains. Although there are options in the winNT and win2K administrative tools, this may not work. The solution is to use the NETDOM.exe command line tool (found on the win2k server cd in support/support.cab). The syntax is something like:
netdom trust nt4dom /D:win2kdom.com /UserO:ntAdmin /PasswordO:ntpassword /UserD:win2kadmin /PasswordD:win2kpassword /Add /Twoway

Type NETDOM help trust or just NETDOM /? for more info.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Simillar issue
mryusufu 10th Aug 2009
Hi,
I have a simillar issue. However, I am trying to migrate from a Samba domain to win 2k3. The Samba documentation says it'll work.
I can even validate the domain trusts in AD domains and trusts.
However, whenever I try to migrate, I get the following error:
Access is Denied (Error Code=5, domain=***)
Any help?
