Good overview

This is a good overview; I hope to see seperate articles for each sub topic in here in the near future that go into each in a bit more depth. That'd be great.

It would seem as though this software and Cigwyn were about the same. What am I missing here?

I would also like to compliment the author on a good article.

It sure looks like cygwin to me. I've been using it for years. I sure would like to know how they acquired it. Didn't Redhat own cygwin? Anyhow, maybe it will help someone. Personally I use SAMBA for my Unix - Windows interoperablility.

1. If I hv a linux server which I want to use as a file server and my Win98 clients hv Client for NFS, can I dispense with Samba server on my Linux server.
2. Do I need to seperately purchase Client for NFS or is it free if I hv the required Win2KCALs for the client machines.
3. A very useful article and a must read for IT professionals with Win2k background desiring to venture into the world of Unix / Linux

NIS and Samba
jobeard 22nd Jul 2003
NIS has been around for a LONG time. Samba is the standard for connectivity to dissimilar platforms.
MS has always made bundles of $$$ by renaming existing protocols/apis, packaging them as NEW products, and dubbing the MS users into paying for it. What a SHAME! Even Apple with nye unto zip market share has enough honesty to implement and call it SAMBA. Shame on you B.G. sad
