Having just successfully completed both the SSCP and CISSP examinations in the past four months, the best I can do is share my particular experience and insight.
1. Use on-line references. The absolute BEST site I've found is http://www.cccure.org. In my opinion, their on-line Quizzes are by far the best free testing material on the web for CISSP & SSCP. When you take practice tests, take the time to read WHY you got the answer wrong, it will stick with you longer and you will learn faster... it's a proven method.
2. Get plenty of sleep the night before the test. Sounds silly, I know. If you haven't studied and don't know the material the night before, one last all-night cramming session won't help you.
3. Be prepared for questionsthat mimic real-life. What do I mean? Some questions have three of fours answers that sound ridiculous, and some questions don't appear to have an obvious choice at all. The questions are intentionally written as you would come across the situation in reality (my opinion), so you have to pay attention to best practices and chronology.
4. Don't second guess yourself. Don't go back and change answers, your gut is usually right the first time. Some of the questions have a little wiggle room, but there is still usually a "most right" answer that you'll gravitate towards the first time through.
5. Read about subject areas you are unfamiliar with. This means going to Barnes & Noble, Borders, On-line and buying a book or two. They are wicked expensive, so look for half-price books or older editions (or used). It will still save you money vs. an instructor led course. (Incidentally, I took no instructor led courses, personally that doesn't help me learn material at all... but that'sa personal choice.)
6. Use the force. (Sorry, just had to throw that in.)
