One thing to ask is: Why is the VPN needed? I think lots of people think that they can run any application over the internet with a vpn. The reality is that at DSL/ISDN speeds, the app may not (probably won't) even run at a usable speed. In this case a solution like pcanywhere is the only answer, since it will not load the app over the network.
