Trunking is set at the switch to make the logical VLAN, say a server at one far end,to be viewed logically as a local LAN by configuraing the port of the switch where the server connected to.

Trunking in effect allows you to assign multiple VLANs to a single port. We actually use something like this on a server with fibre channel redundancy. In the event of a failover, the port on the switch would assume the VLAN of the of the failed server so that the original IP address can be bound and properly routed through the standby NIC.
