I just had to clean 8Gb of French drag-racing movies off my FTP server. Somebody decided tp use me as a relay for all their friends. I was wondering why everything was so sluggish!
I disallowed anonymous log-on, which is a pain since our clients aren't too savvy and now I'll have to explain (at least to the Netscape users) why they'll have to get an FTP client to upload files to us.

Without having to actually download and test a script kiddie tool like Back Orifice, can anybody tell me exactly what a Back Orifice user screen looks like? Is it like Carbon Copy where the hacker can actually view my screen. And does my cursor actually move? Or is it more sureptitious like a listing of fle names? Thanks

Back orifice, doesn't show the screen like pcAnywhere, though it offers more options. you can lock the computer, this way the key board and all menus no longer respond. The mouse will still move though. also back orifice can be told to merge with almost any system file making it invisible to the browsing of the computer. Finally it allows programs to be run remotly of the infected pc. All virus scans detect it though

Nowadays you don't see too many crackers using Backorfice anymore. However, there are plenty of variations on it that are really popular. I've used one called SubSeven before, and it DOES allow you to view the victim's screen. It's got a really neat GUI that allows you to use your mouse on the copy of their screen (which you can set the refresh time for) just as if it were your own screen (i.e. close programs, go back and forth through web pages, etc). Of course, there are many other prank and destructive tools that come with SubSeven as well.

Security Tech's term = cracker
Popular term = hacker

They both refer to intruders that try to break into networks. The problem comes because in the old school of IT a "hacker" refers to someone who hacks around with software, interfaces, etc. to get them to do neat things. It does not have the negative connotations that the term has come to have in popular culture.

I am a computer tech for a small company and I have met a few hackers on IRC for example.
The definition I have been told by a people who do this stuff that it is a cracker who is the one cracking and reverse engineering software and a hacker is the one who is hacking into computer networks for various reasons.
That is what they call themselves anyway.
Hope this will give you more education in the subject.

Jason Hiner's article concerns the activities of crackers. I, personally, would call myself a recreational hacker. Does this mean that I break into other people's systems or deface other folks' web sites? Sure, I could do that any time I like, however, I have far better things to do with my time. I derive greater satisfaction knowing that my friends and neighbors benefit and like using my self-written applications. Or that I can help them sort out their computer troubles. (Furthermore, I reallydon't give a rat's ass about what you store in your systems.)

Hackers are the master programmers who have developed the various distributions of Linux, for example. Those disreputable a******* who write viruses, deface web sites, crash servers are not hackers. They are crackers and most of them possess neither any real skills nor the inclination to learn to use their time and intelligence in constructive persuits.

The distinction is obviously lost on a lot of people, but that is no excuseto submit to the bastardization of the language. How many times have you seen something referred to as "penultimate" to mean better than ultimate instead of as second-rate (which is what penultimate really means)? Or sentences that start out with: "Irregardless..."? These, and many other, constructs may be common, however, they are still wrong, and speak of functional illiteracy. A lot of folks don't seem to know the difference between a hacker and a cracker; that is no excuse for allowing themto continue wallowing in their ignorance.
