I recently tried to add a W98 computer to our network and ran into this problem: After installing a Netgear FA311, the utility showed the machine having an ip autoconfiguration address of 198.124.***.***, and it would not release under any circumstance. I uninstalled the NIC and replaced it with a used 3Com 905C that was known to be good. The same type autoconfiguration address came up, and would not release? I copied the registry settings from a working network computer and pasted them into the problem computer's registry, but this didn't help. I found registry settings for ip autoconfiguration and one containing the stubborn address and deleted them...this didn't help.
Where is this autoaddress coming from, and how do youmake it go away?

The answer is to modify the registry in accordance with this article and the usual precautions when modifying the registry. Make sure you use REGEDT32 as oppossed to REGEDIT. Good luck.

1) in "network properties" from the control panel, remove the microsoft client and all instances of tcp-ip even the ones that may be related to another device.
2)REBOOT
3)re-install Microsoft client and TCP-IP.
4) Yes, sorry REBOOT again.

could u ping to or from your client computers?
What planning/precautions need be addressed if you have existing NT4 DHCP boxes already on the network? I intend to replace my NT4 DHCP servers with Win2K DHCP services.

Thanks...

Mike
Technet has an article on this: Q130642. I'm doing the same thing today, swapping out an NT4 box with 2K. Good luck

When a Win2k Pro machine goes into hibernation does it retain its DHCP leased IP address or will it be issued with a new DHCP assigned IP address should that lease expire?
Useful stuff, enjoyable reading:
?? Why select bootp if the request is fo a reserved address but being routed? Isn't bootp also a broadcast, requiring an ip helper address?
We're a Cisco shop and use VLAN's. The router module forwards dhcp b'caststo our W2K dhcp servers. We have had issues in the past, moving machines to a different VLAN ( subnet), whereby the machine clung to the niotion that it was on the old subnet. I increased the lease duration and we seem to have moved past this. HOwever, the articles refercne to bootp interests me.

Hello,

on an SBS 2000 server I see that 86% of the IP addresses are being used....this is odd since we only have 19 PCs on the LAN and each is using a reserved IP and we should have 62 IP addresses since we have 10.58.77.193 - 254 (mask of 255.255.255.192)...

anyway - perhaps best thing is to change the mask to 255.255.255.0 and then we would have 10.58.77.1 - 254 .... can I do this? and if yes, which is the correct way?

Cheers

Geoff

Does anyone know which Solaris versions will support MS NT/Win2K DHCP services ?
We have a multi system enviroment with NT and Sun.
There is Cisco network hardware in use.
Will Cisco DHCP server a more flexible solution ?

This was an excellent and clearly written article that includes concise and "plain english" explanations for those who consider themselves non-techies. Thank you.
