There is a windows utility called "FileChopper-32 X'tra" it can be found on ZDNet or CNet download areas. With it you can set the size of the file split you want, so you could just set the size of the first split of the .pst file to smaller than2gb.
You might even get lucky and be able to rename the second section to a different .pst and use the inbox repair tool to see if it will recover any of the mail from it!

I have taken PST files that were unreadable by Outlook and imported them into Exchange using the ExMerge utility and successfully cleaned up just enough to get it below 2GB. Once that's done, the user can then clean up their pst file and learn from their mistakes.

This is a great tip if you have ExMerge. You can also try out http://www.repairpstfile.com/ for splitting a large PST file.

I was using the same pst for 3 years. Needless to say, it reach 2.5GB without any problems. However, I had all my email forwarded to another account for 6 months. When I tried to reimport this, I lost all my emails from the last 3 years I have been working here. I noticed explorer told me the size was 2.5GB, but outlook only said it was about 1GB; so I knew the data was still there, outlook just couldn't see it.

Solution: SEARCH FOLDERS!!!
Creat one for mail "older than 1 day".

For some reason, this folder can see the files. I moved them to separate 2007, 2008, 2009 pst file folders and life is wonderful again!

Anyone out there know of an easy way to compress a .pst file after a bunch of the data has been archived off elsewhere?

WinZip will reduce the size by about 50%. You can also make it a self executable to restore where ever you want.

In OL, right-click the .pst file, go to Properties - Advanced button and select Compact Now button. Warning, this can be slow.

In response to the question, how do I compress a .pst file - this may be what you are looking for.
1) In Outlook, select tools, services.
2) Click on the personal folder you wish to compress and select the properties button.
3) You should then see a compact button available.

If you want to compress multiple PST files, you may want to try PSTCompact.

Use PSTCompactor ( http://www.pstcompactor.com)... it can ZIP up your attachments then Compact the mailbox down for you automatically. It can be setup to run on just your mailbox or on across the entire company. I got back 38% *before* archiving off old emails!

Outlook compaction does not compresses the Outlook PST file. But you can shrink your PST file size with the tool located at http://www.compresspst.com

You can use a utility provided by microsoft to compact .pst file.
You may also split pst file which are large in size such that even compacting that does not help you out.

Actually, the charge for a Professional incident is over $200, but that would only apply in the case of an oversized .ost file.
Working with .pst files is generally considered a Personal support issue, for which Microsoft charges $35 per phone incident - this is assuming that you have no Personal warranty support that came with purchased software.

I've been using Outlook for many years (I've moved the same .PST file through several companies) and have noticed small, annoying things that occur on a fairly consistent basis.

Would it make sense to run the Inbox Repair Tool on a "working" PST (backed-up, of course)? Would this perform basic maintenance that Compact doesn't do, similar to running Defrag on a quarterly basis? Or would it potentially do more harm than good?

I've lost about a 480 MB PST file, and since ScanPST didn't worked out, the Microsoft Help Desk provided me a third party solution, which is: www.officerecovery.com .. It didn't worked out for my damaged file ... Hope it could work for any of you ...

Scanpst.exe inbox repair tool is used to repair problems related to .pst files. But some times inbox repair tool is not able to recover information from corrupted .pst files.

Actually, Microsoft support will only charge the $200+ fee if the file in question is an .ost file, which depends on a connection with an Exchange server. The is a Professional Incident.

For a .pst file, which is stored locally on the client machine, this is generally a Personal Incident, for which Microsoft may charge a $35 fee for support.
Many full versions of software (not pre-installed) will come with a warranty, which may let you get around the charge entirely.
