Original VNC
draynes 9th Mar 2003
Does TightVNC integrate with the original VNC at all. I have a substantial number of the original VNC installed and do not want to be forced to upgrade all of them at once.

I have both flavors in my shop and use TightVNC at my workstation to access them. I have never had a problem regardless of what they are running on the other end.

When I need to access computers from home over my cable modem, the best compressionmakes the connection respond with the same speed I get over my LAN (although the picture looks blurry). I can't imagine how I got by before this program. (I'm an IT shop of one and support about 90 users and seven servers.)

From what I can tell from running both, It seems to work well with the original.

Stop the current VNC Service by right clicking on the icon in the taskbar and/or stopping the VNC service in Services. Copy the following 3 files to the existing Orl directory: VNCHooks.dll, vncviewer.exe, and winvnc.exe, overwriting the existing files. Restart (you may need to reboot) VNC service. TightVNC should be active. Review settings.

I tried tight VNC but my win2000 PC was about 10 times slower in response so I took it off after about a day, has anyone else seen this?

If you guys really love VNC (and who doesn't?!) - try STRCM here: http://www.systemtools.com/strcm_frame.htm

This tool allows you to remotely install and view NT/2000 boxes on your network, pending you have the appropriate permissions, that is -

We use SMS here, but sometimes SMS won't work quite right, so I use this as a backup.

Use it in conjunction with TightVNC - it's a perfect fit.

The article seems to claim this is more secure than standard VNC against snoopers....

I don't see how. The 'ssh support' is only on UNIX and even then you have to have SSH installed yourself. I have VNC running through an SSH tunnel to my win2k box which I am pretty sure will at least proect any passwords I type into the remote machine... But I can imagine some n00bs might read this article, and think its fine to remote connect accross the Internet to other machines, and type in admin passwords. Obviously the chance of someone packet sniffing is unlikely but not impossible.

Correct me if I have missed the built-in data encryption that this new version offers, cos I don't see it happy

I will probably change to this version as it offers some nice new features, but it doesn't replace the SSH tunnel that I use it through.

What SSH tunnel are you using and where can I get it? I've tried Zebedee as a means to make VNC more secure, but could not get it to work.

Good point though. I've tried TightVNC and don't see anything that would make it more secure than standard VNC.

I use 'VShell' from www.vandyke.com

its been so good, and so little trouble I had difficulty even remember the name!

although its very odd when you ssh to a server and find a dos prompt staring back at you :@)

I use a free ssh/telnet client called 'putty' to make my tunnels from the client-side. Its also a good tool:

Enjoy.

We restrict subnets that can connect in TightVNC (also works in VNC), using the authhosts registry key.

The latest, development, version 1.3dev5 is even better.
It has a file transfer icon.
So the client can copy a file over to a specific place on the server/host.
I have used it for 2 - 3 months now over ADSL lines and it works fine.
The file upload is somewhat slow. But then ADSL uploads at 256 KBs.

Is anyone aware of a way to have TightVNC able to integrate with Active Directory?

Ideally with a prospective implementation at our organisation we would like to set up a group allowing users to be granted permission to use TightVNC and or removed if they leave or if there are issues.
