Here's a tip, don't use your email as an identifyer in these groups--spammers harvest them

I only use WarezP2P and WinMX. When installing Warez, make sure to take off the checkboxes next to anything which isn't just the program itself. At the time of writing this, there are two additional options.

I had replace the keys for one of my clients, and spent a significant amount of time doing this today. If you want to avoid the reactivation aspect and you don't have a VLK....
I got this to work.

Export the OOBETimer registry key from an activated copy as a reg file. (You only should need to do this once).

Use one of those tools readily available from any sharware program to change the key. This usually forces activation of the new key unless you have a VLK.

Double-click on the exported registry key and when prompted say yes, you would like to add the value to the registry.

Voila - activation nightmare gone and keys updated.

Microsoft's Volume Licence version of XP Pro as it doesn't need activation but if you do not work in the large scale intergration end of the industry and only supply units in one's and two's or work for a small business with only a few computers you may not have heard of it.

However if you work in an area with more than 5 computers running XP Pro the vendor who is responsible for selling you the product is very remiss for not suggesting thre "Corporate Version" of XP Pro as well as M$ Software Assurance program for two reasons.

Firstly it saves the company money and a lot of it and

Secondly it garanties at least a 10% profit for the vendor and with the SOftware Assurance program an ongoing income for at least 3 years for every company that they have sold this product to. Also with the programs currently in place all of M$ software except the OS's are availabe to the workers of the company to use at home without breaking the EULA so if a company has 150 copies of a particular program they can allow 150 of their staff to use it at home.

OK, I did a stupid, and now I need to fix it without having to rebuild the image.

I built an XP box, ran sysprep, and ghosted it. All OK so far, but I wasn't paying attention and used a VL key. Problem is I didn't want to use that VL key. It was a stupid slipup, but I now have an image that wants to use a VL key but I would like to use the OEM key that's on the bottom of the laptop. I can boot the laptop from a BartPE CD and get in and change anything - problem is I am not seeing what I should change so it will accept that OEM key.

Thanks,
-Chris

i tried this one on Windows Server 2003, but the "Change Windows key" menu is grayed out, i checked out with the software's website forum and the author says:

"It will be greyed out for Windows 2000. Windows 95, 98, ME, and XP all support the changing of the product key. I don't know of a way to change the 2000 key."

None of the Windows 2000 updates check for invalid product keys so this comment does not have anything to do with the article or the discussion. We're talking about XP here, not 9x, 2k, or 2k3. XP SP1 is the one that checks for invalid prod ids.

Have you tried the lastest beta version of keyfinder? It works for me.

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/kfbeta.shtml
Keyfinder any version from winkeyfinder.com does not work, is a very bad product and is time that people know that!
Bypassing the Windows 2000 Serial Check

First you want to copy your Windows 2000 setup files from your CD to your hard drive. You have to copy at least the I386 directory (I recommend copying all the files, so you can burn a complete CD later). Now go into the I386 directory you just copied onto your hard drive. Find the setupp.ini file. Right click it, select Properties, and remove the Read-only checkmark. Now open the file to edit it.

Your setupp.ini file should read something like this:

[Pid]
ExtraData=6166656C736263737373B2574A0581
Pid=51873XXX

Replace the 3 X's (generally it'll be three zeros) at the end with "270". It should now read something like this:

[Pid]
ExtraData=6166656C736263737373B2574A0581
Pid=51873270

That?s it! Now you can now install Windows 2000 without a serial number!

Note: After many emails, it's safe to say this works with all versions of Win2k; Professional, Server, and Advanced Server. If it's not working for you, email me letting me know exactly what you're trying this on. I won't be able to help you (there's only so many ways to replace 000 with 270), but I can let others know if a certain CD (ie Win2k Pro OEM) will not work. Also, this will NOT work on evaluation versions of Win2k. So don't waste your time.

Sir, You do a great job of pointing ot the obvious, however in your exaltation of Linux, you forgot to mention that the sorce code and various programs for Linux has been written by just about everybody and anybody, and that Linux in it's wisdom failed to keep track of who wrote what program or parts thereof. They have not got "clue one" as to who wrote certain parts of thier programming. IBM recently got into Legal hot water over this very problem with Linux. So how are we supposed to put our faith in them and dump Microsoft? I think Not. Linux's other little trick is that it's fee all right but if you want add-ons that when you start paying.
Whereas Microsoft created the product,set the standard by which everybody else is trying to catch up and continues to evolve and takes us along with them and you may ret assured that they at least know who wrote what and can refer to any part of any program and who the programmer was, at any given time.
If your going to tout someting, may I suggest that you avail yourself of all the facts.
Linux may be what some call an alternative to Microsoft,I do not. I will stick with what works and a firm that has proven itself over and over again.
AS for the code, it's a GREAT Tip.
I am grateful to have read it.
Thank You

I would agree that at the present time MS products are better, but Linux is catching up fast.I would also remind you of MS behaviour in the free market, I would regard MS as the most corrupt monopoly this earth has ever seen and therefore support any alternative products.

Your rhetoric is nothing but. The very fact that there is a Linux belies the "corrupt monopoly" comment. The MONO suffix means "one;" there is certainly more than one choice out there. If Microsoft is in the number one position, it's because their products appeal to the majority of consumers. They are number one because we put them there with our wallets. But being number one does not mean that there is no number two.

Alternative.
normhaga@... 8th Jan 2007
Of course there are alternatives. I had to remove Linux from all my machines when the 2.6 kernel was released. Maybe another distribution would have worked better. Then there are the installation hassles and the 6 month re installation. Have you found and acceptable alternative to Adobe PhotoShop for Linux? Gimp does not cut it. Linux is also not as secure as most releases of XP, just less attacked and those attacks are less well known. If you want proof of concept for malware installation on a Linux box without administrative privileges read Phrack #63.
Linux is ok for some uses, but you should not regurgitate what others have said. You should do your research. Linux has problems, many of those are more serious than XP has.

I have had to change the key when working on individual laptops outside of the company. Sometimes it is hard to figure out which key was used to install the software. I have been using a keyfinder utility which works pretty well also. All of this is much simplier than calling MS.
The KeyFinder util also works with some versions of Office.

no wonder hackers love this site so much!!!
I have tried all the fixe's including jellybean and I still get the register in 30 days message.
This is an XP home upgrade and I have put it on a new hard drive cause other one failed.
Hate this BS of having to call MS flunky to get some dumb new code I already paid for.
Entering same good code in all programs does nothing--tried other good codes and none work??????

Don't know which Linux you are using but the only way I've been able to remove Linux from any system is with "Bootitng>exe".
Very easy "DOS" program that lets you repartition your HDD.

Boot XP in recovery mode, run FIXBOOT, run FIXMBR, then repartition your harddisk with Partition manager and delete the Linux partition. You can also use the Windows DiskPart in recover mode, not always successfully.

Is this legal?
swstephe 15th May 2003
Does Microsoft support this at all? I had a WinXP machine whose disk crashed. I re-installed WinXP, but didn't have the product code anymore. Microsoft support had to verify that I had indeed bought and registered the actual product before they would give me a product key, and charged me an additional $10, (as a penalty for losing the product key?). That is for the legal product that I already paid for in full and for which they already had my registration. Now you are talking about takinga pirated version, mucking with the registry and registering it with Microsoft all for free. Microsoft may be evil incarnate as a corporation, but it still seems like theft to me. If you don't want to pay for your operating system, go with Linux.It can do everything that Windows can do, and much more, for free, legally, and it doesn't try to get into your wallet for every little thing.
As I understand it, all this means is that you can 'correctly' do microsoft's registration procedure with a real bought 'license' over a possible 'illegal' registraion. And do it without having to reinstall all your other items. They (microsoft) really could care less how you do it, as long as you keep paying them.

Yes it is legal
salty3dog 15th May 2003
RTFA. Pretty difficult to follow the given steps without a valid product key.
(Perhaps you missed this part wink
"For example, perhaps a user installed a pirated copy of XP but now wants to go legal. Maybe you've been hired by an organization that installed 100 pirated copies of XP but now has a legitimate volume-licensing key (VLK). Perhaps an end user purchased an additional retail license for XP but needs to use his original CD to install the software."

Why it may be necessary to change the product key on Windows XP as well there where a very lot of this product sold before MS decided that someone had pirated their new OS and made certian product codes as being reconised as illegial.

Now a placethat I do some consultancy work for a few years ago installed 2,500 new worksations all of which had Win XP Pro installed on a Volume Licence and all these computers fall into this catagory. At the time the System Admin wasn't worried as he had got his fingers burnt with a MS patch so he refused to install any new "Fixes" from MS. But he has since left this company and the new Syatem Admin want's to perform a system wide upgrade to all the lattest new XP pathces/hot fixes and the like but SP1 wont be allowed to be installed so we had to contact MS and get a new product key and change every one of these computers product keys over to the new one. I know that this is a LEGAL copy of XP as I personally picked it up from MS and I very much doubt that they are selling pirate copies of their own OS to business.
Anyway over the Easter Break we all went in and changed these product keys over to the new one and then performed a system wide upgrade following MS directions on how to change the product key.
You said" Anyway over the Easter Break we all went in and changed these product keys over to the new one and then performed a system wide upgrade following MS directions on how to change the product key." What directions did MS suggest?

When Microsoft Introduced SP1 for XP it made some Product Codes as "Pirate Copies" and there where many that where Legal copies but they fell into this area. Microsoft actually released a notification about his when it released SP1 and informed all of its Certified Partners and OEM builders of the potential problem.

What is required in these situations is you need to change the original product key to install SP1 and most of the subsequent patches as they will not apply without SP1. Now Microsoft acknowledge this problem and if you ring them up with the details they will issue a new "Product Key" but it takes about 10 days here in Australia and comes from Singapore.

They also give you instructions on how to change the Product Key so that SP! will install but in all honesty the Jelly Bean product is a far easier thing to use as it is a lot faster and if like me you had to change 2,500 product keys over in one company it saves you several days.

To get the replacement product key you have to jump through hoops and all soughs of other things but the main thing that you have to do is read them the number of the Original CD's inner ring which while small can be on either the back of front of the CD depending on when it was made. If you do not have an Original CD you can not get the new product key from Microsoft.

Although from a recent "Security Advisory" that I received from M$ I understand that the cracked copies of XP that are around can be cracked again so that the new product key is generated and allows the user of the pirate copy to install SP1 and all the rest of the patches. Most likely a new batch of supposedly Pirate Numbers will be made when SP2 is released soon.
