I thought any changes in the registry done on Win2K up had to be done using regedt32 or else registry corruption would occur because of regedt32 knowing 5 file types vs regedit only 3. Is this right?
The protected mode version is better, except in certain rare cases, such as fighting certain viruses.
So yes, 32 is the choice.

In Windows NT4/2000 Regedit has better search capabilities than Regedt32 but cannot understand the REG_EXPAND_SZ or REG_MULTI_SZ data types. Changing values with these data types using Regedit can corrupt the Registry.
In XP/2003 Regedit and Regedt32 do the same thing.

For more info check out Knowledge Base article 141377 which explains this in more detail.

Another way to help speed up a desktop refresh time that`s being choked down by a lot of icons,is to create two new folders on the desktop, rename one "PC Tools" the other "games" and drag`n drop the icons accordingly. When done I have only 5or6 icons. Recycle,ISP,Browser/s,PC Tools and Games. This seems to help somewhat, especially on the older EDO powered Machines...

Icons in Folders
Blinkr 13th May 2004
This is what I have begun to do as well. It sure saves desktop space. You can also find your programs icon faster when it is one of few in a folder as opposed to being one many on the desktop.

I have a question about all of this: changing the icon cache & putting icons in folders really has nothing to do with speeding up Windows loading at startup, does it? All this has to do with just desktop refreshes, correct?

thanks for the tip. The Reg value was added and 'bingo' problem solved.

Profox
The last post on this was way back but...shouldn't the value be REG_DWORD, not REG_STR for this to work? I checked my XP Pro register and it was already set to 2000, but as DWORD.
Hi All,
As old as this post is, this problem is still rampant for a lot of folks.

Couple points, and here's the deal...
- proper datatype is String (REG_SZ)

- if you are using known good solutions and they fail, or
- if you are setting it the correct way and it reverts to a Dword datatype (REG_DWORD) and keeps failing, or
- if it just seems broken or wrong to begin with (when you look it up in the registry),
..., there is an explanation, and a solution, for this.

It could be because of a third party element that is rewriting the registry key "Max Cached Icons"
- Widcom Broadcom BlueTooth Drivers have been known to do this.
They were informed about it, fixed it, and some of their drivers have been known to have been fixed...
- but I have the latest drivers and they are evidently 'broken' again...

No matter what the deal may be that is "undoing" this for you, I finally figured a workaround.
I posted about it here:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/articles/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/IconCache-Max-Cached-Icons-DataType-Reverting-Incorrectly-from-STRING-to-DWORD-SOLUTION.html

...complete with proper credit where its due.

Its long because its detailed and thorough.
I hope its helpful to those who may find it.

Cheers,
TwoHawks
