If the workstation doesn't host any files or printers, turn the feature off. Sometimes you'll run into a situation where a workstation used to host a printer and that printer moved. Extra running services means extra packets. Not many, but they do add up. Unshare any folders that don't need to be shared, or move them to a central server. I had a user who complained of her PC getting very slow at different times during the day. Turned out, she was the one that hosted a set of forms the entire office used. This was set up before I came into the company, and surprised my IT director as well.
Can somebody enlighten me:
The -i option refers to the Time To Live
There is no -I option.
Is there some update I need to do ?
Its a lowercase L on XP, also -f needs to be lower case :

PING -f -l 1500 999.999.999.999

I don't understand why MS and others insistent create fonts where 1, l, I (One, Lowercase L and uppercase i) are indistinguishable from each other !
The Title of the article is " Increasing Windows 98 network performance " Therefore, suggestions about WinXP are not needed.

Doesn't look like you ever got a reply!

The option is -L (buffer size). To see all the options just enter Ping

My system likes 1432

The Value GlobalMaxTCPWindoSize doesn?t modify the MTU size but the TCP receive window size (GlobalMaxRcvWin). You can check in http://support.microsoft.com/?id=239731

But you can use the value PMTUDiscovery to make Windows automatically discover the best size.
Take a look in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;158474&Product=w98

MaxMTU
techasf 18th Jul 2004
At the very end of MSKB 158474 is a reference to what does need to be done to mess around with the MTU.

Seems you need to add a registry entry MaxMTU to the following registry key where n is the particular TCP/IP-to-network adapter binding. On my system I have only one NIC and it is 0001

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\netTrans\000n

The default MaxMTU value for the datagram excluding SNAP and routing headers is indeed 1500 on an Ethernet network unless the media driver sets another value, in which case the minimum of the two is used.

So, the real question seems to be what value is the media driver setting anyway and which could already be a value less than 1500.

But wait there is more - as they say in the TV ads:

The article states:

"In an Ethernet network, MaxMTU will default to 1500."

So far so good. Buried somewhere in the internals of Windows is a value of 1500 which is used to set the max datagram size, unless it is replaced by the value in a registry key named MaxMTU.

"The actual value used will be the minimum of the value specified with this parameter and the size reported by the media driver."

Still OK even though no light is shed on the media driver or how to find the size its reporting.

"The default is the size reported by the media driver."

This flat out contradicts the first statement.

Is it possible then that all we achieve by using Ping to find the maximum undefragmented datagram value is in fact to discover the value reported by the media driver and which is being used anyway?

There is an additional "tweak" that sometimes works. Right click on My Computer, choose Properties, then the Advanced tab. Underneath it is something regarding desktop settings or performance settings. When you click on it, it will give you the choice of setting up your machine as a Server or a Workstation. Choosing Server, believe it or not, actually maximizes the use of RAM.

Sometimes this setting only helps in a minimal way. Many times, however, you get a noticable few seconds extra speed to it.

Hope this helps someone.
