The procedure seems to force a disable setting change to System Restore with the service control then an enabling step with the normal interface.
Doesn't this stand the cahnce of causing a possible later restore corruption as I was under the impression that to clear out the old restore points a reboot was required?
If so, this should be done between steps 6 and 7.

I've been having this error message come up while I try to use the Screen Saver tab in my Display properties. When ever I click on it I recieve this message:
Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience
Its very strange and while my screen saver does work it doesn't allow me to change it from what it was before because I can no longer access the settings page for it. There is also an error log created in applications log after this error occurs and it looks like this:
Event Type: Error

I've been having this problem for maybe 3weeks now and searching the internet hasn't proven useful. Also this problem occured during a time in which I had a bad RAM card in so it might be a problem created by that either way I dont know how to fix it and any suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steven

Here is the solution for it.
Just download the Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE from www.lavasoft.com . It can remove many unwanted softwares and registry entries. I used this to fix the same problem in windows xp.
Hope it was useful

On 12/17/04 MS "Automatic Updates" installed four "Security" updates in my Win XP Pro. My system crashed, a retart took over ten minutes. I found my "Sys Restore" completely empty, so it took 5 days to clean up everything. MS help just passed the buck from one desk to another every 24 hours. One problem was ".net" clobbered - suggest you review MS Knowledge Base article #316250, page 2, item 5.7 about .net damages.
such a beautiful and elegant solution. saved me a lot of headache. I updated my drive (cloned with Norton Ghost) to a larger capacity. I lost the "system restore" functionality. same error. so I followed the steps (first stopped the service and then disabled it). The rest followed the steps.
activated system restore on both partitions and took the new first snapshot. Thanks for the help

Solution worked like a charm for me. Besides setting the service to "disabled" I also "stopped" it, tho I don't know if that was necessary.

Who knew that just restarting System restore corrected the problem! Also corrected chkdsk /F problem. I spent an inordinate amount of time on this Reinstalled SR, scannow run, countless virus scans, registry hacks, countless time on the internet....
Just about to reinstall xp and lose my data! Now I'm good!
Some times looking for a complex fix can complicate matters, Thank you again for the solution!
Also corrected Drwatson problem too!
