As network admin for a large (120 plus) site k-12 networ, each with their own mail server. I have been experiencing the recent onslaught of SPAM first hand. Fortuitously we recently put a mail filtering system in place on our external mail relay system.

We have been using Mailshield form Lyris. I have found this to be a very good and highly configurable sytem that runs under Windows or *nix.

The filters are built ona scripting language that is a subset of Perl so it is not difficult to develop custom filters and the product comes with a large (more than 40) number of builtin filter and mail semantic checking as well as anti-relay and countermeasures.
It was also resonable priced, check it out. I have found that a dual processor system is easily capable of handling out entire organizations e-mail.

Hello:

It would be nice to see a comparison of enterprise and small business mail products side by side in article. We are currently using one product and wishing we had purchased something else. I have been searching for a top 10 list of mail filters by features and yet to find one. It would be nice to find that here at tech republic.

I agree with Oscar.
I am currently performing lab testing of two email filtering products (Mail Marshal and SurfControl Email Filter. But I'm not sure if there is anything else out there that would fit better my company size (250 users). Looks likeSurfControl is geared for large companies and MailMarshal at first glance is over simplyfied. I'm trying to find a product that would fit my company size and would have easy to use interface and of course very reliable filter.

Jakub

P.S. I'm looking for MS Windows based solution.

No inclusion of the most popular open source program in this article.

Use it at work (using MailScanner to wrap Antivirus into a mailgateway) and it works very well for free.

Now the Messagelabs Anti-spam /virus service gives you the option to add Brightmail as a layer. Very nice addition.
