On the issue of Single System Image requirements,
I would add the capability to do a "single" OS installation.

HP's (formerly Digital / Compaq) TRU64 Unix has a great feature that greatly reduces the number of OS installations (1) and time required to build / add nodes into a cluster. All that is needed is a single FULL installation. Additional nodes are added by supplying a few parameters and booting the new node into the cluster and voila' a new cluster member is online.

Some problems allow the same application to address different portions of the data other problems allow different parts of the application to run on separate processors. However not all problems can be deomposed and so the advantages of clustering is lost when this happens and you need the biggest honking machine you can get like a CRAY.

The biggest problem is the ability to understand which prolems can be deomposed and then have the knowledge of hardware, networks, operating systems, databases, and applications to accomplish this effectivly. The breadth of knowledge is so extensive that specialists in sciences only know their branch of science and so they run an application on a workstation for a couple weeks when it could have been run in much less time on a cluster.
