The Serenity Prayer covers a the same area, but don't forget the other key pieces - change the things that I can change and wisdom to know the difference.
If you believe that the world is the way it is and there is nothing you can do about it, this is excellent advice to take.
If you believe the world can be better, do not waste time in anger but do use your new situation as a catalyst for change.

Feel lucky you only lived through it once... and it sounds like it was a respectful parting... very lucky..
I agree with you - get on living or get busy dieing as they say. It was a bump in the highway of life - and just pick yourself up and move on, and sometimes that laid off was a good career move.
But I truly believe that it is the disrepect shown by the HR departs that gets professionals upset, during those layoffs.
We understand the need to downsize (rightsize, outsource, increase the bottomline)- we understand the business cycles - and we realize we haven't a voice when these things happen. We will accept that card that has been dealt to us (well thats was the way it was in the 3 different layoffs I've been involved with)..
What got everyone of us P'ved (300 total count on the first, 132 and 375 on the last) and upset was the way the company handled the layoff, and disrepected the employees.
After 20 years at the first one - no severance pay - no nothing - A Jack-Booted local Cop and the HR manager stopped by your desk - you were escourted to the HR offices - you were told your services were no longer needed. Then the Jack-booted local escourted you to the front door and place you in a cab.. to take you to your car or home.
2nd one - at 3:30 in the after noon the boss stops by and drops off an envolope - with the "Pink Slip" -
3rd one - was almost as bad as the first one - but with local security guards instead of the local armed police...
It isn't the fact that - you are getting laid off - it is the RESPECT the company gives the employee when they are Laying them Off...
HR = Heartless Resources - Heartless Bastards -
That group is the Problem and cause of why people get mad during lay offs and return and do violance against the company. They react to the Disrepect from the company and the Heartless HR bastards. These employees have give 10 or 15 or 20 years of their lives and they are escourted out the door - like they stole the corporate petty cash fund.
Yes - I am over those beautiful experences - but they are still Heartless Bastards - everyone (yes I know you shouldn't group them all into the same category - but they all are when it comes down to it).. If they would lay you off with the Respect the Employee deserves there wouldn't be any problems...

You don't have control over your emotions. You only have control over the way you react to your emotions.
I agree that you have to stay positive and professional otherwise you just hurt yourself.

Reminds me of another really good article about this on Tech Republic: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-1035_11-1039630.html
