I like the idea of them, but in this era of downsizing, they may meet with resistance. Only management knows the true motives when they implement this program.

Since the early 70's I have mentored senior executives, entrepreneurs and professionals worldwide. My practice focused on crisis management analysis, planning and implementation issues as well as innovation development. In offering mentoring as fee based services, clients appear to have a greater appreciation for the advise rendered and are more apt to take mentor based advice to heart.

My observation over the years has been that people tend to put more value on advice which they have to earn, merit or pay for and less value on advice which is freely given.

Polling entrepreneurs, who were given free advise through the SBA/SCORE program, tended to prove this out. When polled on the usefullness of the free advise they recieved, many found the advice as being superficial, lacking, dated and out of context.

Mentoring, in my opinion,is a rewarding second career opportunity for executives to perpetuate and share their life experiences with those who are willing to engage their services. It is all about the synergy that develops as we pay the price of success and share life experiences as we move through our career path. Those who are willing to pay the price of success tend to have a firm grip on reality, a keen sense of value and a strong desire to continue in their personal growth path.

Not everyone lives for the pat on the back, but when it comes, there isn't anyone who isn't warmed by it. There's nothing quite like the "embarrassment" of a well placed kudo in a department meeting. Both mentors and proteges need to know their timeand effort is noted and appreciated.

The three articles offer solid information and the only line that spoke of any form of feedback, was the last sentence of the third article.

With the current depth and breadth of knowledge and experience one must gain in a "New York minute" a timely compliment offered can be as rewarding as a cup of hot cocoa to your trusty mailperson on a cold winters day.

Our company is about to embark on a mentoring project. I read your article to see if we are approaching the right angles. We seem to see eye to eye on this. It is a value-added service that compliments an overall package. Like extra gear in a backpack on a long trip. It's sure to be usefull in the long run. I enjoy your article and will give it high ratings.
