http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/15-100948-1652630

First let me start out by making it absolutely clear that you understand that an SAP Career strictly divides itself from any MS cert type career. Do not confuse the very basic standard SAP training that companies provide to navigate in SAP for beginners - with any career. An SAP Career is full time such as that of an Oracle DB Admin. It would be futile to learn SAP implementation and at the same time pursue your MS Cert Career. Of course not that it is impossible. SAP requires dedication, dicipline and expensive training to pursue a career. SAP consultants are almost always groomed from the in house business group or MBA type support people. To come from the outside you would need not only technical training but to be assisted by the implementation support team as well. If you have a Logistics background, MBA or Data Base implementation background - that helps. High Stress is an understatement but an SAP career is excellent if you love a challenge. SAP careers are divided in areas such as BASIS, ABAP programmers, and Functional development in the various SAP Modules SD, MM, CRM, and FI etc. My best advice would be to talk to an SAP support person in your company and perhaps a business relationship may turn into career.

If you have the money, SAP has excellent training available, however it is very expensive. If the interest is there, I would probably find employment with a current SAP customer, learn the techniques for supporting it and have that company pay for the bill to send you to class! For more info on classes, go to www.sap.com/education and click on your country.Good Luck!!!

SAP Consulting is an altogether different proposition from implementing SAP in-house, that's true. A good guide is Reed and Doane's SAP CONSULTANT'S HANDBOOK, available at Amazon.com, etc. There are several sites that offer SAP training, www.planetlearn.com, www.igiusa.com -- but I haven't surveyed those courses in depth enough to say which are best for consultants working on an implementation.

http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/15-100948-606700

It is not presently possible for IDoc technology to be phased out, as such. IDoc and BAPI are companion technologies, rather than competitors, though this could change.BAPI refers to SAP's Business Application Programming Interface. Froma business standpoint, all SAP interfaces may be thought of as BAPI interfaces. From a technical perspective, all interfaces described as the method of a business object are BAPI. The differences from IDocs emerge in communications modes: BAPI can be invoked directly in synchronous communications. In asynchronous communications, IDoc is the transport mechanism. Both are modeled within Application Link Enabling (ALE). For transport of business data, whether by EDI or ALE, IDoc remains the required interface. According to SAP's Thomas Becker, who works in Application Integration Technology, most data communications in SAP systems contain both a BAPI component and an IDoc component. The BAPI interface component serves as front-end to the functional IDoc interface. Whatever pressures may exist to replace IDoc cannot prevail until SAP itself undergoes a significant overhaul.
