I generally use Visio for mapping and then create hyperlinks for each of the mapped systems on the Visio document that link to an html inventory generated by Belarc or similar inventory tools. Belarc is only for personal use, so if this is for a corporate setting you should check out the other offerings on the Belarc homepage. (www.belarc.com) If you don't like the thought of mapping a large network in Visio, Fluke Systems makes a great product called LAN Mapshot that will scan your network for you and auto-generate a Visio map of machine-names and IP addresses using a Visio plug-in.
My current company was already using AuditWizard from Layton Technologies. It is very easy to use, is inexpensive and they keep making improvements. The feature I started using and love is the email scan. I sent a zip containing a scan applet to every one of our mobile users. When they opened the file, the scan ran and the results were dumped into an automatically generated email that was sent back the next time they checked their mail. The downside to AuditWizard is that it doesn't read enoughBIOS's so I get a lot of 'Generic PC' listings that I have to then edit manually, and exporting the data to Excel is bit cumbersome.
Right now, I'm looking into eSmart from ASAP Software. They host the product, so there's no installation overhead. They also say they aid in tracking stolen laptops by scanning for identifying information once the laptop is reported to them as stolen. I haven't gotten pricing yet and my fingers are crossed.
I've used Belarc and some others in the past and asI recall, exporting to Excel was a problem, although that may have changed since I used them.
Hope that helps! --Frank--
