Before I went out on my own, I worked as a network integrator at a consulting firm and watched as the owner bought bigger and bigger houses every couple years."Yes" you need all the support services you mentioned because many businessmen don't hesitate to take advantage of the "little guy". They don't think you will retaliate (ie: sue) if they don't pay you fairly. But the freedom to decide which clients I want to work with - or not - and where I want to accept projects has been phenominal. I have installed networks in the Bahamas, Canada and Alaska even though I live in Virginia. Not only did I get paid for my time but the expenses of the trips were also paid - I viewed it as my "paid vacation" every year.I probably do work harder now than I did when I was an employee - but I also make about 4 times as much each year!

Here's the tear, when you go to "printer friendly" is it possible to make the banners and other items in the black and white world.
Striking Out on Your Own: The last time I ventured forth -- well prepared, I might add -- the market crashed and I lost $27,000 in one fell swope. I had to go on the dole and was, at one time, stealing food. That was 13 years ago, and everytime Ithink about going it alone again, I have to remember those awful days.I am currently exploring simultaneous, surreptitious consulting without giving up my current position. A fall-back pillow, so to speak.

Striking out on your own.: When on your own, you always have to explore for your next mandate, which is a burden. When you are besy on a contract, you don't have time to explore, and if you are not doing a mandate, there is no revenue coming in.Aside from that... when you are working, you can earn a lot more.Claude
