I like Mike
cdaveygo 25th Nov 2001
Mike has a great technique, showing his obvious CIO experience. I have also recently left the HealthCare industry to try my hand at consulting. I have yet to find a long-term contract with any success. I have managed to find 3 or 4 clients through similar techniques as Mike. Devoting part of my day to marketing and networking is crucial to my future success. I have also learned that dedicated space is key to working at home.

Working at home is great but you have to be careful of distractions. Not everyone can have the discipline necessary to go to work when the commute is only two minutes. I find being in a routine is very helpful in this regard.

Getting up early and checking email, then looking at the day?s tasks and moving forward from there, always seems to get me off on the right foot. The key is to not stray from your planned day. A news program or getting involved in some research on the net can kill your whole schedule and likely to keep you from your planned day. Set time aside as Mike suggested for research and things that you want to do.

Remember this is a job and you have to stay focused and professional at all times. This will help you attract more clients and keep you motivated at getting your tasks done. Just think, if you had to manage a person that was doing things that you are doing, would he / she be happy with what you accomplish. This is an easy litmus test for whether or not you are being effective.

Mike I really appreciated yourarticle and will look forward to more insight from you.

Sincerely & Good luck.

Dave Alton
