All the features of the Cisco Pix, Concentrator, and IPS devices integrated into one affordable device. I have read that throughput wise they are comparable to a pix 525. I did notice that IPS is a module that appears to be pretty much self contained i.e. it has it's own memory, processor, IP address, etc. So it would appear that the only thing integrated is the software that runs it. I look forward to a Tech Republic article on this topic.

good question!

Dear Confused,
This is a good question.
Just as in home network gear where the individual router and hub have now become integrated router, switch, firewall, and wireless AP - the Cisco ASA line is blurring the lines between the traditional devices in the Cisco product line.
Thanks for the idea on the article. I will research the ASA some more and see if I can dissect it into a sensible newsletter.
Thanks for taking time to post and thanks for reading TechRepublic!

Re- Licensing IOS
nwnick Updated - 14th Apr 2006
"I can purchase a used one for less than $2,000, it offers everything I need, and I've installed the same router at every other remote location."

I hope you are re-licensing the IOS - to stay legal wink

Thank you very much, that was a very informative article. I have learned a lot about some of the Cisco routers. What I liked the most was that the Cisco routers are traditionally very reliable, and Cisco traditionally offers a high level of support, and also The Cisco Product Advisor, which helps you choose what is best for you.

This is a great article... for 2005. Why is the article going out in the 7th May 2007 TechRepublic Daily Digest?

eg the 2610 has already been superseded twice 2610 --> 2610XM --> 2811

No wonder I get calls asking for 2600's still lol.
Hello all,
If you also need to choose the best switch for your soloution try the ethernetadvisor website.
compare between Cisco switches and also comparing with other switch vendors. Try it www.ethernetadvisor.com
