Let me ask a silly question about ACL's-

What is the proper way to pronounce ACL?
Is it an initialism or an acronym?

An initialism would be saying the letters individually (A, C, L). Example, how you pronounce FBI.

An acronym would be saying ACL as a word (pronounced ?ak-el?, like ankle, without the N). Example, how you pronounce NASA.

I prefer it as an initialism, like ?A, C, L? but what does everyone else think?

I hope everyone enjoys the ACL newsletter & Thanks for reading TechRepublic.

Personally I like the initialism pronunciation but the real question is, is initialism really a word?

define: initialism on google say yes.. and if google says yes then god himself has spoken! I preffer the initialism as well. Something tells me that the word ackle just wasn't meant to come out of caffine junkie techies. A-C-L sounds more impressive as well as it makes management think they don't know the meaning of three letters instead of one funny word. Not that i like to play on the insecurities of single serving fake management persons happy

In my mind I say "akkel" (ak'kl). If I am speaking to another Cisco programmer, I will say the letters, A, C, L. To anyone else I say the words "Access Control List."
TLA's have their place...

ACL (Access Control List) doesnt sound good as "ackel" or how ever you want to pronounce it...

Great article but, at the most informative portion subtitled "What's a numbering sequence?" half the text was blocked out by a Big Blew ad with some Jacki Chan look alike wearing boxing gloves. This happened with both of my browsers (IE and NS). The fix was setting NS browser to zoom text 125%. WTF, loose the ads guys or at least put em at the top or bottom of the page where they dont interfere with the text.

We believe we have fixed this problem. Please try opening the article again. If you have any problems, let us know. Sorry about the oversized ad.

Thanks for reading TechRepublic and for taking time to post!

When routing on a single arm router. e.g. interVLAN routing with subinterfaces.

the in and out swap,

inbound ACLs are applied on the interace outbound.

outbound ACL's are applied on the interface
inbound.

so an 'access-list 170 IN' applies the 170 ACL outbound in such a configuration.

this might also affect 'ip inspect' statements but I have not yet proven this.

Hi there

I am studying for my Cisco certification (CCNA)and love the TechRepublic Cisco articles and this one was no exception.

One thing I would have liked was an example of adding remarks to an ACL which you alluded to on the final page.

I am sure I can find it with "Google is our Friend" but it would have been nice if it had of been added here.

Again thanks for a great learning resource, keep up the good work and Happy Holidays.

Repair shop here, We need your help running a diagostics test on our 40C48E POS-SC-SR, and the chassis control board is running fine, but i'm not able to see the 2 40C48E POS-SC-SR. I also need to find out how to setup a ping on the 2 40C48E. Do you know the default factory command? One more question, Is 40C40E a switch or tokenring?
this helped me a lot for my preperations....
Thanks a Lot!!!

I made a free video on how to create, configure, and apply Cisco IOS Access control lists (ACL).

I posted it on my website. Here is the URL:
