"Do you really think this article can fool a seasoned Adware warrior like myself??? What a joke. I LMAO when the $5 worth of "Herman Bucks" popped up enticing me to purchase the "pick of the litter" anti spyware suite.
Spyware is no joke. I?ve seen more $ damage from spyware attacks in the past year then all the previous Virus attacks combined since 1997. Adware today is so rampant that you need to run at least four or five different removal products to effectively clean an infected machine. This of course depends if you?ve also been infected by a rootkit attack or not. And what about Rootkits??? Do any of these adware software suites detect them?? Do their manufacturers even know what they are? I doubt it!!! All anti virus/adware manufacturers are asleep at the wheel when it comes to rootkit attacks and until they address it in their software, you better keep your restore discs handy. As for you Becky, why don?t you stick to databases, buy some teeth, and go back to that third world bag piping rocket ship company that you came from. Leave security article to the pros....."

You could add TrendMicro to your list with HouseCall and PCcillian. First is free scan. The second is good for 30 days.

One advantage

Trend Micro recently bought InterMute software. InterMute has, to my knowledge, the only product capable of fully eradicating 'CoolWebSearch', not just disable it. Oh, and for the time being its free off of Trends Web site.

I was surprised to find I had traces of it on my machine which gets updated twice a day from two separate vendors.

It has been my experience that you can install and run 5 different packages, and all 5 will identify different spyware on the PC. Is there any one program that identifies and eradicates all spyware?

Nope
beads@... 1st Jul 2005
Its impossible for any one single company to totally eradicate all spyware. Problem is who gets to define what as spyware? All these companies that produce these products are in a position to make decisions as to what is and is not legitimate for the purposes of spyware.

Its a tough call and some companies do a better job with one type of spyware than another. Best to use atleast two vendors.

My company has had extensive experience removing and repairing damage from spyware/adware/malware & virus'. Panda software has the best options for removing this junk and keeping it off the systems in the future. You can download a trial version of their Titanium and Platnium versions which both include anti-virus, anti-spyware/adware/malware, firewall and a few other features, not to mention "True-Prevent" which, to my knowledge, is the only technology which prevents virus' and other baddies from penetrating your system without having a "known signature". Some hassels from from the firewall blocking wanted connections, which are repairable, are tollerable because the rest of the product is so good.

Lots of hardware
beads@... 22nd Jul 2005
There is a good number of hardware platforms that do just that without the aid of signatures.

On the software side Panda is probably the leader though you can buy the extra 'Outbreak Prevention Policy (OPP) module from TrendMicro which does basically the same thing for a bit more money.

We haven't had a lot of problems here save a macro viruses from clients so we aren't ready for such a huge investment... yet. It will happen eventually. Spyware seems to be more of an issue than anything virus oriented as of late.

People need to be aware that the current version of this freeware product is for noncommercial use only. Unfortunatley, that provision eliminates me and my clients, as well as many of your members.

last week I tried to remove the above mentioned spyware with all kinds of anti-spyware, ad-aware corporated edition and all, but the bugger kept coming back all the time. msconfig and all but nothing helped.

Almost advised customer to have his laptop to be re-imaged so to eliminate the problem.

That to be done I just tried what we all do know not to do, went to the website of the spyware mypctuneup.com and downloaded the un-installer..I know but it did remove all spyware related to Aurora without a problem.... so sometimes working this way may solve the problem for good....

good listing of products. Microsoft antispyware is at beta 1 and seems to be very robust if you do the deep scan option not just the quick scan and seems to be quite effective at cleaning up the registry when other products could not. As noted by others there is no one product that gets every malware, spyware or trojan. Have used webroot spysweeper, adaware se, microsoft and spybot and each seems to come up with a slightly different list.

As many replies state, no one program removes all the spyware. AVG anti virus is one of several I use. It often finds spyware and trojans which many of the others on the list do not. It is free for home users.

F-Prot has a beta out for Rootkits called Blacklight that is very good - for the time being. I think the beta expires today: 1 Jul 05.

I keep AdAware SE, Spybot Search and Destroy, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Tool, CWShredder and Hijaak This in my memory stick and can generally remove spyware with free software. This was not worth the time to download a list of commercial software without any comments rating the programs. Links to reviews are just too easy. I hope Tech Republic didn't pay for this.
The only programs I use are:
Windows XP: Microsoft AntiSpyware
Windows 98/ME: Spybot

Some of the other anti-spyware programs seem to be SPYWARE. Cause the problem, sell the fix.

Maybe you should check it against the Rogue list and fix it...

An omission?

Add Kasperspy's Anti-Hacker to your list (www.kaspersky.com). It comes bundled with IOLO's System Mechanic Pro and is a lot less intrusive to other anti-spyware. Most of the others require YOU to guess what is and is not spyware.
and I never did get it!

I have recently found Ewido Security Suite while looking for a nasty but(nail.exe). This tool, just as any of the tools listed doesn't do everything, but it finds most of the Trojans, Keyloggers, Dialers, Worms, Hijackers and Spyware that I have run across in the last couple of weeks.

Let me know pro or con.
