The problem I have found is that there are sites I can not navigate if I DON'T have IE. These usually have forms or other IE specific navigation. I use FireFox as my main browser, but every now and again I have to use IE.
I agree that certain websites only support IE, which is a major hinderence. I'm all for not using microsoft applications, but unfortunately more than 90% of the world is dependent on it.
On another note, I thought there was away to get windows to launch your default browser, even if you used a window

Install the IEView extension for Firefox. Now, all you have to do to view a specific page in IE from Firefox is right click on the page and select, "View this page in IE". FF will load IE at the exact page you were at in FF. Problem solved. Still surprised about how many people don't know about this extension at this day and age.
I have windows ME dial-up. I do not know much about computers, but I can follow instructions. There are 126 errors on ActiveX and an error msg. form exp (wintask) that says error kernel32.DLL error. If I close it, computer freezes, so I leave it open while working. Anyway to disable IE and fix Activex and the DLL without blowing this thing up? Would appreciate help.

Appaires not to be an offical ext. maybe why not alot of people don't use that ext.
Its listed on addons.mozilla.org, that's official in my book.

In Windows XP, you can use "Set Program Access and Defaults", from the Start menu. I believe this option became available through a Service Pack or hotfix. I cannot speak to its usefulness or functionality; I've never had an opportunity to test it.
It has a feature that allows you to see a particular site with the IE engine.

I happen to disagree that there is only firefox to use as a browser. Netscape has been around for a long time, about as long as IE has, and is alot better than IE. I have not had the privilege to use Firefox. Netscape has a lot of features that I like and use that I have not found in other browsers. Try Netscape browser you might like it. It is free and is secure. Yes there are some web site that only allow IE, but if they want business they are going to have to change. One reason that they only allow IE is that they know it's weakness and hack in to your computer.
Im a FF fan that seconds this! Opera is another excellent browser. I stopped using it b/c it's not free, but I've heard excellent things about it. In addition, there are several other smaller players out there to check out -- DeepWeb is another browser; however my experience was that it was better for newsgroups and feeds but not for browsing.

From my experience, companies post IE only websites out of laziness and ignorance more often than not. If a company assumes that most of their customers are representative of the market, then they assume that such potential customers are IE users. It is only recently that companies are realizing that ignoring a segment of potential buyers can be damaging. Many companies are built on MS networks and thus all of their inhouse programs & applications are MS/IE compatitle. Thus, it is easy to forget that other systems, networks and browsers exist. If management insists upon being blind -- developers and web page creators are limited in what they can provide

You could also just paste the below into a text file with the .reg extention and double click:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]

"ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001

jebwhs87 is correct. We must keep IE operation even though We don't use it as our prefered browser.

In the article you stated:
"No matter how many patches Microsoft releases, ActiveX and the Browser Helper Object.... And antivirus software can't defend your network against IE exploits."
With Panda Software's "Trueprevent" technology in it's current products, and also available separately, those very items and almost ALL other vulnerabilities - even those in Firefox - are blocked. It even stopped the recent Votob.D virus before the AV definition files were updated with protection for it!
Granted, I do like Firefox for most of it's benefits, but as with an earlier post - at least 15% of the sites that I work with on a regular basis do require IE's functionality. I will have to try out the IEView mentioned to see how that works.

Hello,
I just followed the first method, and set the proxy settings for IE.
I find that, when panda antivirus tries to update, it cant. And I have to remove that setting in order for panda to work.
But i thought the proxy setting was ONLY for IE!

Finding out the address that Panda goes to for updates....
Right click on IE, Select "Properties > Connections > LAN Settings > Advanced" ... In the exceptions area down the bottom of the advanced page (Marked by "Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with") ... type "*. .com" (Replacing the "" with the domain that you found.) I'm sorry I don't know this, as we don't use Panda Software here, it's all Symantec and ePO)...

Go to c:\program Files\internet explorer folder
Right Click on iexplorer.exe
Select Properties
Select Security
Remove all objects
Internet Explorer will no longer execute and will give a warning you dont have enough security to start this program.
Please note by removing all users in the dialog box you will not be able to reset the security settings. If you are in a corporate environment like I am all my users are not in the administrators group. I remove everything but the Admin group. Users can no longer start Internet Explorer.

You don't need to even leave any user or group there... Administrators can get privileges to any folder they want to just by taking ownership of the folder in question. (Even to folders that they don't have access to already by default.) This gives them full control over that particular folder. This info applies only to NT, 2K, XP, Server 2003 and above only, and will only work if the drive is in NTFS format.
Eg. There are some folders in 2K, XP and above that even the admin account / group doesn't have access to by default. Eg. "C:\System Volume Information."
To do the following step using XP Pro and above, you will need to disable "Simple File Sharing" you do this by selecting "Tools > Folder Options > Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)" and make sure that there is no check in the box beside it. Click Apply and OK. This will enable to Security tab on all folder properties dialog boxes...
XP Home Edition doesn't have this option. You have to use CACLS / XCACLS to take ownership here.
If you right click on the folder, select properties and then select the Security tab, click Advanced and then click the Owner tab. You can take ownership of folders or even entire drives from here.

We had a bunch of machines on which we didn't want ANY web browsing. Restricting access to iexplorer.exe didn't stop people from using Windows Explorer as a web browser! But putting in a bogus proxy setting stopped that cold.
There are still a number of web sites which require the use of IE and plug-ins for it that do not appear to exist for FireFox (yet). So, for now, I have to have IE around to perform certain maintenance activities.
I am hopeful that this will change very soon; but MS may be offering incentives to use their browser to some of these businesses.

1. In IE, go to Tools | Internet Options.
2. On the Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button.
3. In the resulting dialog box, select the following check box in the Proxy Server section: Use a Proxy Server For Your LAN (These Settings Will Not Apply To Dial-up Or VPN Connections).
4. Enter 0.0.0.0 in the Address text box.
5. Enter 80 in the Port text box, and click OK.

or simply go to User Configuration, open Administrative Templates, select System, then go to the properties of Don't run specified Windows applications and add iexplorer.exe and enable.
child in abscence of parents should not view internet
The first method described also disables firefox, effectively cutting off internet access. Way to go, you are an out-and-out genius.
