Relationship to what can happen in personal life
simon_mackay@... 6th Dec 2005
Hi!

This social-engineering presentation shows what can happen in one's business life. Similar behaviour DOES EXIST in one's personal life.

Think of phishing where you receive a spam e-mail or a phone call purporting to be from your bank or a business you have regular dealings with and asking you to go to a particular Web site to type in your confidential information such as credit-card number or account password on pain of reduced or no access to your account.

A similar social-engineering act in one's personal life is card-skimming where a clerk, waitress or other employee copies your credit card details while they and your card are out of your sight. You might think that it is taking some extra time for your transaction to go through, especially when the business is naturally busy.

Yet another social-engineering attack that has been highlighted by local police forces is the "distraction burglary" crime that is performed by criminals disguised as officials from government authorities, utilities or other service providers. They use this cover to obtain entry to your home, often under the threat of you being in trouble for not complying with their "right of entry" request; and often senior citizens are the victims of this style of crime.

This presentation could be used as a model for highlighting social-engineering in all factors of life and can be of use to crime-prevention or security programs.

Simon Mackay
