Encryption is a kind of encoding. Encoding is just translating a message into another language. With encoding, you have to know the language to get the message back. With encryption, you have to know the language and a key to get the message back. It's supposed to be difficult to get the message back without a key.
There's even a kind of encryption called one-way, where you're not supposed to be able to get the message back even if you have the key. Public key encryption combines one-way and two way. If you have one key, it's one-way. If you have another, it's two-way.

Encoding is to convert (as information) from one system of communication into another. Where as Encryption is to scramble code to where it is not decypherable with out a key. If I used a encoder for text it would mearly transfer the text to the encoders format. And by using a decoder transfer it back. A encryption program scrambles the code by using algorythems of various lengths so that only the key or password might be able to descramble it.
Encoding is in simple words is compression which we use in our compression softwares(zip, winrar). And it's mechanism is easy to recover the original ,while Encryption is something in which our best effort is not decrypt except it's owner /key holder.
