Normal.dot not found
deadhead '59 11th Oct 2005
The section on customizing the look of the Word Window gives a file path to find the Normal.dot global template. This proved inaccurate, at least in my case, as there was no such template there. However, I found another way to modify the global template.

Open a new (blank) document. Click on File, Page Setup to change the margins, paper size, or orientation. After making the changes to set your template the way you want, click the "Default" button at the bottom-left of the dialogue box, then click "yes" when Word asks if you want to make this change applicable to all new documents. Other features, like font and styles, can also be modified this way.

I found this tip at http://word.mvps.org. This is a very useful site with lots of other tips and tricks.
