This utility works great for troubleshooting systems with issues, although of late I've only been using it to change local administrator passwords.
I have to say that these kinds of tools are badly needed with the current generations of MS operating systems. Designed to be more robust and just to prove it MS removed any decent tools to assist in recovering from even the smallest of problems.

But just as the article points out, there are many self-boot repair products out there that do nearly everything listed for a whole lot less than $1,439.00. That's just plain highway robbery. Software vendors never cease to amaze me. So if it doesn't fix my problem or help me recover my data can I get my money back?

So now that MS is collecting the billions they claimed they were losing because of piracy due to their new implimentation of Genuine Advantage do you think we will see a reduction in the cost of their OS? hahahaha.. Nope, it's just more screw you mr. customer all the way to the bank.

you 're right; they 're both feeding of ya !

Better to switch ...
Wow... $1500 is a little steep for the average repair tech to shell out. For larger organizations with more PCs to service on a daily basis, I can see spending the money for it, but they should have a backup system in place anyway. Whenever one of our workstations takes a dump or has problems, we're allowed to spend about 15 minutes to diagnose it, and determine from that point how long it will take to repair it. If the diagnosis and repair time take more than 30 minutes, our policy is to reimage the machine over the network. The network XP load (including a dozen applications and driver loads for NDPS printers) takes 21 minutes to fully restore a workstation. All saved data is stored on shared network resources, so there isn't any user created data that needs to be "restored" to the workstation. I'm not sure, with other products available, where this product would be useful. Maybe if the majority of PCs that needed repaired were of the mobile variety, with users that rarely backup their data... maybe.

When I work on computers "on the side", I have basically the same policy. If the diagnosis portion takes more than 3 hours (or I find more than 1500 pests/spy/malware entries), it makes more fiscal sense to recover the important data (from working Hard drives), repartition, reformat, and re-install the OS and applications. $1500 for a software package... who does Winternals think they are? MICROSOFT????

Toolkit pricing

Ontrack charges $500 bucks if you are a lone customer ,but $1500 if you are a tech that will use it at different customer sites.

Mybe Sysinternals should do the same.
Is the $1500 price tag before or after Microsoft's acquisition?

If after, no wonder then.
"who does Winternals think they are? MICROSOFT????"

Funny.
It was announced today that Winternals was bought by Microsoft.

It seems to me that most of the computer repairmen will prefer reloading the OS instead of paying that amount of money for that product... Sometimes the OS is so damaged or corrupted that we have to reformat the drives and reload the OS anyway... The product may be so good but the price is definately scarry!...

I don't think sales would be so good and with Microsoft taking command.... I won't seem so unrealistic in thinking that your fate is doom!... They -Microsoft- are extremely famous for screwing things up!

You need very good luck from now on!

Although I agree with recommendation of ERD commander I was surprised that the article even mentioned an out & out Warez like Hiren's Boot CD. Considering the $1500/= for this product people would be tempted to explore "freebie" alternatives.
