I think that the CoCo was Radio Shacks first real communications gateway to the world. I saw a demo of it displaying realtime weather information, that was available by subscription. I think the only requirement was the teletype cartridge. Seems like it also could be used for a TTD device.

No one mentioned the CoCoII which did away with the silver case.
