There was a widespread Spectrum culture in the UK - i used to see their magazines in bookstores. The major reason it never caught on in the US, i think, was that Timex insisted on re-designs to differentiate it from the original Spectrum that made it in compatible with much of the Spectrum software and peripherals, and then failed to follow through with versions for the machine here in the US.
