I have made note in the past that the "long hours" is often mentioned on reasons that women leave the IT field. Many people seem to think that they can earn the large salaries that IT workers can make without putting in those long hours required.

I do recognize that you cannot be an effective parent and working 90 hours a week at a career. To think otherwise, leads to a whole generation of latch-key kids and the social disorder that is generated by these non-supervised children.

I have met very few mothers that are willing to sacrifice time with their children for more time at the office. I suspect that if you checked any industry that required long hours from employees, that women would not find themselves drawn to those careers.

I don't condone gender-based policies at the office, I've often seen them in action. The old boy's network in many offices is the old girl's network also. I've often had to thread the administrative assistant's road map of booby traps and land mines to get to management on issues. Rather like dealing with a mother lion and her cubs!
