Use of laptops ("fat clients") can not be avoided, at least in my business.
Automatic software deployment for laptops has to be implemented anyway for MS patches and others.
Deployment of thin clients additionally to these fat clients means doing same things with different tools.
A Gartner study tells that well mangaged fat clients (locked out users) may be just 8.5% more expensive than thin clients. Flexibility of fat clients may be an advantage.
How do you think?

You can have your cake and eat it too.
The benefits of Terminal Services in large scale applications like and ERP are many. So for those, have a Terminal server set up and have everyone needing the application run it through an RDP session. You can still upgrade the client in one place and ensure everyone is on the same version. So in many applications, we have older PCs acting as thin clients, laptops, or new PCs also acting as thin clients for major applications, and running personal or specialized software on their own computers.
