prioritization, good or bad?
My understanding is that net prioritization can be good or bad. No matter the size of the pipe you pay for between you and your ISP, you still have to compete for bandwith between the points where you and your ISP meet and your destination and their ISP meet.
If you're sharing files, a variable bandwidth isn't a big deal. If you're having a real-time conversation with someone at the other end (i.e. VOIP), you'd like to be assured you'll always get sufficient minimum bandwidth between you and the person you're talking to.
QoS rules and bandwidth prioritization can give you this. So long as packets are prioritized by application (i.e. VOIP has higher priority than file sharing) and not by destination (provider X gives higher priority to packets to/from sites/applications they like) then I think prioritization is a good thing.
