Visual FoxPro is a front-end GUI, application language, and database all in one. This make it a great value for a small price. The article refers to "ancient version of Fox Pro". I wonder exactly what version of Visual FoxPro the company is using. Visual FoxPro can also act as a front-end to a MS SQL backend.
Migrating to dot net with a SQL enterprise backend can be very expensive, especially when it is necessary to purchase new hardware, buy Windows and MS SQL licenses, train or hire new ITstaff, and re-write all applications, etc. This is not only expensive, but it could take several two or three year to achieve. It should be noted that good security can be achieved with the use a VFN. Groups can be defined within the windows OS, andfolder and files can be defined to require membership in the group as well as a password to obtain access to the folder/file etc. Most VFP payroll application have logins built into the application.
Since the introduction of VFNs, MS SQL securitydoes not provide as big of an advantage as it once did.
Visual FoxPro is great as a rapid application development langauge. It is also great for distributing an application accros an enterprise or to other customers that would like to purchase a ready built application. It is simple to use and administer and is very fast. It has to be one of the best value on the market today when compared to many other alternatives.
MS SQL, DB2, Oracle, Informix, Sybase, MySQL, Postgres, etc, also have their place. If you need really big databases, or your company is an enterprise class company with thousands of concurrent user located throughout the world doing many reads and writes, then an enterprise class database should be used. Also, using an enterprise based database might make security more manageable in this scenario.
