NetBIOS and repetitive devices
Okay, here's one for you. We are developing some wireless IP based devices that don't have a keyboard, so we are using adhoc ( on the device ) for the initial connection. Once connected, the device serves up the pages so we can enter the proper SSID and security. Then the device reboots (with DHCP enabled) and we use the netBIOS name to find the device again. That causes two problems.

One, depending on the router and the browser, sometimes the device name shows up okay in a browser (such as http://device-name), quickly, sometimes within a few minutes, and sometimes never. The results vary depending on closing and reopening the browser, as well as the browser itself (mostly tested with IE8, Firefox and Safari). It also seems to depend on the router that the device is attached to.

Two, some routers don't seem to propagate the NetBIOS name at all. Very Frustrating.

I'd also like to see a article based on browsers and also if anyone can help with the issues as described. Is there an easier/better way to accomplish this?

Thanks.
