Use FreeDOS as a replacement for MS-DOS
For some, a better alternative might be DR-DOS, now being looked after DeviceLogics. Here’s an article reviewing the history of this O/S:
Start-up revives once-vaunted DR-DOS
The article also mentions other “derivatives” of DOS still available:
“DR-DOS will compete against a variety of other DOS implementations, including DataLight's ROM-DOS, Paragon Software's PTS DOS 2000 Pro and IBM's PC DOS for Embedded Devices. In addition, an open source version of FreeDOS is available.”

Appears to work. I normally use IBM PC-DOS7 on a bootable CD with the networking drivers. You will need three or four programs and a batch file is convenient to handle the sequence and required parameters. Remember DOS is ugly when networking.
1 - the card driver needs I/O (300h) IRQ (5)
2 - stack - ipxodi or tcpip or arclan
3 - 4 - client, whatever sees the network.
[It has been a year since I needed this.]
As always 'Good Luck'
