Did you try this approach with a multifunction device? If so, which functions worked? Did you have to change anything on the PC?

No, I did not test this with a multifunction device so can't say for sure how it would work.

However, I can speculate that some of the functions would work, but not all of them.

To find out for sure whether your multifunction device will work correctly with the Wireless-G PrintServer (WPS54GU2, I'd suggest that you contact LinkSys.

I attached my Epson Color Stylus 860 via USB, my
documents print fine but I get a "communication error
occured" message during and after printing. Also you no
longer have the use of cleaning utilities or ink cartridge
status. Linksys tech support was no help on this problem.

As I mentioned in the "Troubleshooting printer connection problems" section of the article:

"...you need to understand that certain problems are inherent when using a bi-directional printer and its associated software with a dedicated print server device?regardless of the brand. As you may know, a bi-directional printer is designed to send information back to the printer software installed on the PC. This information includes such things as ink cartridge status or print job status. The software that provides this bi-directional communication is designed to work when the printer is directly connected to the computer via a USB or parallel cable connection. Unfortunately, most of this software is unable to communicate over a network connection, regardless of whether it's wired or wireless."

As such, you will receive "communication error
occured" messages when using your Epson Color Stylus 860 printer.

You should be able to disable the error messages by changing the print processor from the OEM version to Windows's default version as I explain later on in that same section.
