At home I just put a cake cooling rack under the laptop and it raises it up about 3/8" and lets the air circulate. It has worked well for two laptops so far.
The cake rack works great!
I actually came up with an idea (mid 90's) for a collapsable set of arms that open in a cross and has a small watch-battery operated fan in the middle ads a portable stand for placing your notebook on, never did make one though.
Someone has made and marketed another similar one, far bulkier and non-collapsable since then (I assume that is in the article, I don't use TPG though).

Although it has less of an efect on women, using a 'notebook' on your lap is NOT a good idea. With men it can elad to testicular problems and the heat for extended periods can inflame the prostate.
You will notice that laptops are now calld 'notebooks' industry wide, this is because manufacturers realize the possible effects of extende duse on a lap, and therefor edo not advertise them as laptops any longer but notebooks.

You might want to check out the Spindock and add it on your list, it's a super light lazy susan for laptops that costs about 10 bucks i think. it easily fits in my laptop bag and always impresses people at business meetings (conference room or table at Denny's!). http://www.spindock.com
