Technical topics that are made easy to understand, and a lot of information. I especially liked the information on prefetching. It's not easy to find info about that.
I found this articale very interestig and educational and would like to know more about Windows XP KSB 3/14/02
Anyone know how this actually works? Is there a maximum to the number of prefetched files? If a program is deleted, or unused for a period of time, does its prefetch priority drop out? Apparently the files (.pf) can be removed manually; when should this be done?
We are about to install a number of Windows 2000 servers but I would like to know if Windows XP Server has been or is about to be released. I have Windows XP Professional installed on my home PC and so far it IS the best OS Microsoft has produced.Seems quicker and has some nice features...
Very good article. I have a ? that I was wondering if anyone out there might know the answer to.
I have W XP Pro and I have defragmented my NTFS drive at least 8 times. My MFT is always 3 fragments. No other files are fragmented.
The article states that "The MFT can be defragged, as well." Apparently mine will not defrag to less than 3 frags. Does anyone know how to defragment the MFT to less than 3 frags?

Part of the $MFT can NOT be defragmented online. The first 16 clusters (which also happen to be the first 16 records of the $MFT) can NOT be moved online. The remainder can.
The built-in defragmenter (just like its commercial brother Diskeeper)counts the $MFTMirr as a fragment of the $MFT when it actually is a separate file. The $MFTMirr is one of the many NTFS metadata files that can NOT be defragmented online. If your $MFT is in 3 pieces, then it actually means that the $MFT is in 2 pieces and the $MFTMirr is in 1 piece.
