If we automate the execution of disk defragmantion, the user will have to stop using the workstation during that time. Is there a way that the user can continue to use the workstation and disk defragmantaion happens in the background.
Schedule the task for a time when the PC is on but the user will not be affected by running the defragmentation process. (Lunch or outside of working hours yuusually works.)
Simply schedule the defrag. during overnight hours, or when computer is not needed.

More Options
cconti@... 8th May 2002
Excellent article. Please note that there is another tab that allows "MORE OPTIONS". The options allow the user to dramatically reduce the wasted space on the hard drive.

Keep up the good work.

Defrag Run As
hillwr 31st Jan 2004
I tried setting this up to run as the local administrator, but it fails. A general user cannot run this command. It seems only the administrator can. I logged in as myself with admin rights to the box and it still failed. Am I missing something here?

Thanks!
Greg, Thanks For the nice article!

I made one change here. instead of
--WshShell.Run "W:\DiskCleanup.reg"
i have put
--WshShell.Run "reg import chr(34)W:\DiskCleanup.regchr(34)" -- which will avoid passing two enter commands.

Registry import will work only when Reg.exe is there in System32 folder.
Reg.exe will be available in all XP machines i belive.

chr(34) can be used when there is a space in the path/file name of the reg file, so as to pass the path/file name in Double quotes in the command. Like -- "W:\REG Files\Reg file.reg" --.
Let's pick a decent, free, safe HDD defrag tool that works on XP and doesn't take several hours (this is one reason scheduling it over lunch won't work).

Some people recommend Auslogics

or O and O

http://www.freedownloadsplace.com/O-and-O-Defrag-Download-15929.htm

and a few others, but there doesn't seem to be a clear winner.

Can someone point us to an unbiased review that recommends some best ones?

Thanks for any help.

Try the DK Freebie
derek@... Updated - 9th Oct 2008
Jim,

Disclaimer: It's admittedly hard to be unbiased. But if you're looking for "freebies", then just download the full 30 day Diskeeper trial. It will take care of any fragmentation you could possibly have. But unlike the others mentioned, it will have no resource conflict since it only uses enterprise processing technology to perform its operations.

I'm reminded of the old expression, "There is no such thing as a real free lunch". In other words, you get what you pay for. Or in this case what you don't pay for. So if you're gonna go hunt for a freebie, then just get the real deal (freebie) off the Diskeeper site.

Thanks for the tip on DK Trial, but I still maintain that any OS that reduces its own performance because of the way it keeps its disks (dis)organized needs to provide its customers with a no-additional-cost repair tool that works acceptably well.

If my current efforts to get off of Windows altogether and on to Linux (current preference is Ubuntu) don't go as fast as I hope (and they now seem to be succeeding), I will revisit this defrag business. Otherwise, for this reason and many others, I will decide that the benefit/cost for me of Windows has slipped below that of other alternatives and I will no longer invest any more unpleasant time fighting frustrating problems that should not exist in the first place.

Thanks again,

Jim
