Thanks for the tip on DK Trial, but I still maintain that any OS that reduces its own performance because of the way it keeps its disks (dis)organized needs to provide its customers with a no-additional-cost repair tool that works acceptably well.
If my current efforts to get off of Windows altogether and on to Linux (current preference is Ubuntu) don't go as fast as I hope (and they now seem to be succeeding), I will revisit this defrag business. Otherwise, for this reason and many others, I will decide that the benefit/cost for me of Windows has slipped below that of other alternatives and I will no longer invest any more unpleasant time fighting frustrating problems that should not exist in the first place.
