Nice article for beginners. If it includes screenshots of router configuration, it would be great.
I like it this way... it helped me understand things on router and I am looking forward to the succeding articles..
It would also be easier if their are screen shot..

Straight to the point. A little more on the type of wire to connect the router to the PC would have been nice. I bought my routers from a "refurbished" shop and no cables came with it. Had to call Cisco and get a pinout for an rj-45. But this article was very helpful along with some of the others.

Hey, don't stop there..... you've just told us how to get to configure it. Not HOW TO configure it

Its nice to see PROS getting back to just the basics and in such simple language .Article excellent ...
Its nice to see someone pulling up such efforts to give us basics on Cisco Routers......It was a refreshing experience for me going through the basics as I had configured a router way back in the Yr 2000
Beginners please take note that the task of configuring Cisco routers is not the same for all of the routers. Many will confuse different types of devices for a 'router'. This article covers one approach of many at configuring a certain class of routers that Cisco produces, from scratch.
If you really want a good how-to on basic Cisco router configuration, there is no better site available than http://www.cisco.com. They have an excellent documentation database on all of their products that will provide you the information you need for all tasks associated with your new or used router.
I do applaud this author's attempt to provide basic information on Cisco routers. No offense at all to the author as the material presented was basically correct for the situation presented.

Now, whoever is going to follow this article is in for a real ride.
ok... now what?
This would be great if it was part 1 of a 200 part series. I will follow up on the next 2 installments. It appears to be helpful to the greenest of the green.

Well, I'm one of those greenest of green when it comes to Cisco routers and can't wait for the upcoming parts.
What is was like to not know everything.
There is nothing wrong with not knowing everything. It is the clowns that run around telling everyone they are a computer god that I laugh at.
As for me, the more I learn about computers the more I realize just how little I know.
As long as the articles state what lvl they are for up front, it is great to have something for everyone.

I'm pretty green too.. but he could've gone more in depth with this installment.
has been to make it so any articles that have any REAL meat are all on the pay side of the site.
The "free" articles have been more and more aimed at attracting novices into the fold and then steer them into the pay.
Maybe someday I will check out the pay site, but who has the time?
And you may have as many breaks as needed, but I had pictured you as more experienced than that? My mistake? Should I apologise for overestimating you? Na, I will continue to give you the benifit of the doubt.
I just know personally people that are real good at what they do, but they couldn't teach a noob if their life depended on it BECAUSE of the like I (mistakenly?) said in the last post about forgetting what it is like to be new to EVERYTHING. It can be really overwhelming. I used to teach at the local community college and now do all "in-house" training, and it is mostly people that can't copy a file to a floppy, let alone know where it is stored if not in the default folder with the other 500 files.
Did not intend to sound condencending towards you in anyway.
And yes, some people need you to start with the "how to plug in" or "this is a mouse, not a foot pedal".

I had specific tasks within the field, but never on a well rounded basis. I've worked with various routers (mostly broadband), but have never had the pleasure of laying it out from scratch.
Keep in mind that I'm only 25, so there's a few in my knowledge. If I come across as "knowing everything"... then it must be my professional manner. Nobody knows everything, but I know what I do... and I do it well - heh - well enough to eat, I guess.

so unless you are mr a$$ kiss, you must be competetent?
Did I say "know everything"? (too lazy to go back and look)
If you like linux you will love cisco. they are fun toys to play with. Download a sim and play with it.
There was a tip list just posted here in a newsletter a few daze back.
I personally know a lot about everything and little about something?
Decent in serveral fields, but not an expert in any of them because I don't get to spend enough time on any one of them. At least I get my five hours sleep every night.
Notice the others that are REAL green all got something out of that article.

That's just me blowing hot air when I see the words "don't take offence" and "I don't mean anything by it".
Phrases like that tweak my pride. Character flaw I guess.

I got my CCNA in 2003, but haven't messed with my routers since then. I forgot my secret enable password, and needed to reset it.
I was surprised myself to realize I had just about forgotten everything, and had trouble dumping my old configuration.
Use it or lose it applies here. :^)

Hi. I began a CCNA class a couple of days ago and this is the most I've learned.
Boson's NetSim software is the best available. It is so good in fact, that I think that you can upload your config and use it on the same model ios ver. router.
true that.boson has the best router simulator around.it actually has another application, Boson Net Sim where u setup a configuration for a given network.
many of the Cisco interfaces are proprietary connectors to Cisco so a short course on WAN and LAN connectors on the 2600, 1800,2800 series modules might help those who are new and using a home lab.
Usually the ISP sets up the demarc point with the connectors the WAN interfaces will use but home labs will have a devil of a time using a real working lab on the internet because the serial connectors aren't ethernet.

I finally understand how to config a router but I wish my instructor could have explained it as simple as you have if e had I might have earned my CCNA Certification by now After taking 3 of the cisco CCNA classes I was still having problems understanding the router configuration process I just figured it was beyond my scope well thanks to this article I know better and I can finally set-up and use the cisco router to set-up a web and file server Thanks Again

While this is written more for the person starting rather than the pro and obviously the equipment is much more than needed for the tyro or home office. I was much appreciative of this simplified approach to setting up the router. I gave the links to my college age daughter to set up her home system.
I am sure this will do much to take the "black box" enigma away from routers and even the wireless routers.
I know many IT supervisors who have avoided using these tools because they did not know what they did or understand their basic function.
Thanks,
Cole
