Duh! Need this near the top of the list. Are the disks running? Do you still have free disk space. No free space? Then no temp file space, no room to place those reference, event logs, records for network etc etc etc. No space? Machine falls over.
....with the latest SBS2003 updates, we finally found the problem - RRAS. A faulty remote connection was set up previously, and the updates triggered a virtual atom bomb. For 10 hours, our server was the most secure server ever. SMTP was even blocked from port 25. We were SAFE!
I still have to deconstruct the event to find out what exactly happened (other than making everyone very mad at me...)
