Java goes for the desktop, just when the desktop goes to the web. They say the problem is too hard, but if an applet uses just a dozen or so classes - some basic networking and 2D stuff, with dependencies blowing out to several dozen - why does the java load time have to blow out so long? Isn't that what dynamic class loading is for? I'd happily accept a port of J2ME to just have the basics available running in an applet with an almost instantaneous startup time.
I may put up with it, but I won't get over it Mr Gosling!
Good article, quick briefing covering the main feature of Java SE6
