Good description of the features of ISCI SANs..but in my experience, Fortune 100 corporations are just completing their large scale move to Fibre Channel technologies, and so it will be a long time until ISCI becomes a standard in corporate data storage.

Rather unfortunate that corporate decision making always trails technology by a few years.Ideally, corporates should move directly to ISCI SANs.. some of the latest variants are quite stable and advanced already..rather than a move to Fibre channel SANs

Could anyone recommend some good sources for comparing the performance of iSCSI vs. FC SANs, and SATA vs. SCSI drives, for SQL Server 2005 storage?

Some of the questions we're struggling with include:

- Using raid (5 or 0+1), how many drives (SATA or SCSI, 7.2K, 10K, or 15K) does it take to exceed the transfer rate of the SAN (FC or iSCSI)? (For example, could 8 10K SATA drives match the performance of 4 15K SCSI drives?)

- How are SANs generally configured for DB storage? As one big raid array to get the greatest benefit from striping? Or is it better to configure the SAN with separate raid sets for the trans logs and data, like the internal drives on our existing SQL server.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Most of the storage arrays attached to SANs have some type of cache pre-fetch algorithm. It has been our experience that mixing random I/O with sequential I/O on the same logical volume will confuse the cache pre-fetch and results in reduced performance. You should consider separating random and sequential I/O on different logical volumes.

KernSafe iStorage Server is an advanced and powerful, full-featured software-only iSCSI Target Server for Microsoft Windows (both commercial and free versions).

iStorage Server is IP SAN solution and allows you quickly export an existing storage such physical disk, partition, CD/DVD-ROM to all the clients, that delivers immediate benefits allowing storage to be consolidated, virtualized and centrally managed, all the data, such as photos, games, software, movies and so on, will shared to all the clients logon the target. iStorage Server is an ideal choice for any sized business. Even though, it is also a good solution for personal user, he/she can share data between workstation and his/her laptop computer with iStorage Server will bring more convenience.
I think the iscsi regarding vmware is very useful for small company.
