I replaced mobo on Gateway computer has Gateway OEM XP PRO, now requires activation, MS and Gateway say NO, need to buy new OS, ok will buy but what version of XP PRO do I buy and can I just use the product number off the new OS and install on current working OS (but needs activation )and how,legally

The joys of OEM software.

You can purchase just a license, or a new OEM copy of XP.

Then call the activation phone number, and they will talk you through changing the license.

If you have not reached the end of the 30 day activation period, there are a couple of articles posted here at TR on how to change the XP product code.
