This type of behavior has been linked to addition or removal of CD/DVD-ROM authoring tools. Please see Microsoft link here (KB314060):

The MS article mentions Roxio/Adaptec (now Sonic) EZ CD Creator, but I have seen this behavior with Sonic MyDVD as well. Try the registry hack they mention, and restart....

I removed the registry keys mentioned above and the problem was fixed. I had CDRWIN and Burnatonce installed, so it could have been either of those programs as well. I think I also uninstalled Roxio which MSDN says is related to the problem. Also upgraded WinAMP recently, which does contain Sonic software these days (Roxio)
Thanks for the suggestion. I wasn't using Roxio, but I was using Quintessential Player (QCD) and then all of sudden, poof my CD/DVD was gone. I was getting the same error message from Winodws in the control panel. I earased the registry keys like it said and un-installed QCD and presto, my DVD is back.
Thanks!

what is the answer to the problem? I bought an external USB cd-r dvd burner today and got the same message. this is some kind of BIO attack aimed at stopping your computers ability to burn cd's. i had Roxio ez creator plus when it all went down.
